Where a Willington Childhood Begins

Celebrating it's fifth year, our Nursery for children aged 3+ is the gentle gateway to the wider Willington world. In our specially crafted FAQs, delve into how our Nursery programme not only sets a strong foundation for your child's educational journey, but also integrates them into a dynamic and nurturing community.   Read on to discover the specialised learning opportunities, community integration, and the myriad benefits that our Nursery provides for each child:

What kind of social and academic foundations will my child develop in the Nursery?
Children in our Nursery develop essential social skills through interaction with a diverse cohort. This engagement enhances their communication and interpersonal skills. Academically, early exposure to structured and playful educational activities helps lay down foundational skills, preparing them for more formal education in Reception and beyond.

What specialised learning opportunities do children have in the Nursery?
In our Nursery, children are introduced to language learning through sessions with our French teacher. They also participate in music sessions focusing on rhythm and rhyme with our Music teacher, and enjoy physically engaging activities in our hall and playgrounds with PE lessons conducted by specialist teachers.

How does enrolling my child in Nursery benefit their transition to Reception?
Enrolling your child in Nursery benefits their transition to Reception by offering them an early introduction to the school environment. This includes familiarisation with a larger setting, varied teaching staff, and a broader peer group.  Our dedicated transition programme is specifically designed to guide Nursery children smoothly into Reception, ensuring they feel secure and confident as they progress.

Are there any outdoor activities included in the Nursery curriculum?
Yes, outdoor education is a significant part of the wider school curriculum. Nursery children participate in outdoor educational sessions twice a term with the rest of the pre-prep school. These activities are designed to instill a love for nature, promote physical health, and provide practical learning experiences outside the traditional classroom setting. The nursery rooms have immediate access to a covered outdoor area where various activities are set up, allowing children to freely explore and learn in an open, safe environment regardless of the weather.

What kind of external trips do Nursery children participate in?
Our Nursery children enjoy various trips throughout the year from Wisley and Kew Gardens to the Polka Theatre and the Natural History Museum. These outings are carefully selected to complement the in-class curriculum and offer real-world experiences that are both educational and engaging. Trips are planned to grow curiosity, expand understanding, and provide a broader perspective on the topics covered in class.

How does early enrollment in Nursery support my child’s confidence and independence? Starting school in our Nursery allows children to adapt gradually to school routines and expectations. This gentle introduction helps them build confidence in navigating school life and encourages independence through age-appropriate activities designed to support their developmental milestones. This sets a strong foundation for personal growth and learning efficacy.

How are Nursery children integrated into the wider school community?
Nursery children are actively included in the wider school community, enhancing their sense of belonging and broadening their educational experience. They participate in significant events like Sports Day and Celebration Day alongside pupils from different year groups, which helps them understand teamwork and school spirit. Age-appropriate assemblies are tailored for them to enjoy and learn alongside their peers from the rest of the school.

Nursery children also benefit from interactive learning experiences with older pupils, such as reading sessions where pupils from the prep school come into the Nursery to read stories. Nursery children are included in house activity days and end-of-term events, helping them feel connected and valued within the school community. All these interactions support the children in understanding their role within the larger Willington community while ensuring they remain comfortable and confident within their own class setting.
